St. Johns Middle School Folklore Festival and Assembly. Late 1980's through early 1990's. Project partially grant funded through the Arizona Commission on the Arts and the St. Johns School Board. This project was the brainchild and dedicated work of Carolyn Cowley Nielsen, schoolteacher in St. Johns, Arizona. It was a multi-year project that included the gathering and recording of stories and cultural traditions, classroom demonstrations, a festival at the St. Johns Middle School, and a Folklore Assembly presented at the St. Johns High School auditorium. This collection includes some of the recordings created during that time. Carolyn also partnered with Northern Arizona University Professor Keith Cunningham and his wife, Kathryn to gather the stories and make the recordings. Much of what was gathered was included in a book introduced and edited by Keith entitled, "The Oral Tradition of the American West. Adventure, Courtship, Family and Place in Traditional Recitation." It was first printed in 1990, by August House Publishers, Inc.
